Important Stuff
Tomorrow, there will be an Easter Mass in the gym at 1:30. We also visited the book fair today. Students will be bringing home a wish list of books they would like to get. On May 6, our class will be purchasing books in the Learning Commons. Our mealworms continue to grow and it is important to bring in some fresh fruit each day. They only need a small amount so they can share with their human! Take a look at this short video on the lifecycle of a mealworm:

More Earth Day Pledges and Newest Members of Our Class
We have just begun our new science unit inquiry about "Growth and Changes in Animals" Students got to choose a mealworm to place in the habitat they had created with a glass jar and oatmeal. On the first day, we cut up some apple to place in the jar for the mealworm to get some water. We also did some experiments to see what would happen if we a) blew gently on the mealworm b) tapped gently beside the mealworm and c) placed a drop of water on the mealworm. Here are some pictures of our new class members! Each day, fresh fruit should be added to the jar and the old fruit placed in the compost bin.

Comparing 3D Shapes
In groups, the students compared two 3D shapes that were on their tables. Here is what they came up with!

The Legend of the Three Trees
Today we watched "The Legend of the Three Trees". Ask your child what is what about! Afterwards, we began to work on sketching out what the trees became at the end of the story. Stay tuned for some great artwork!

Kidblog Part 2
Kidblog
Today. we got started on making our first posts in Kidblog. All posts and comments are monitored by me..the teacher...Our first post was all about introducing ourselves. Even though a lot of us 'published' our blog, a lot of them are still a work in progress. We were having some difficulty saving our posts so I decided to publish them anyway! We can always go back and edit them later. Blogging is another venue for students to write and share with their peers.
IMPORTANT!
Water bottles are due at school so we can make our Easter craft:)
Cardboard Arcade is Tuesday (bring in spare change to play the games)
Glass jar (with lid) due next Thursday

We Create Change
Thought I would pass this on from the Grade 6 Team at St. Cecilia:
Grade 6 Team
Let’s create change with St. Cecilia’s “We Create Change” coin drive.
For our Lenten Project, the Grade 6 students will be running the "We Create Change" coin drive from Wednesday, March 26 to Tuesday, April 15. The fundraiser is part of the Free the Children’s Year of Education initiative to build 200 schools and improve access to education in developing communities around the globe. For every $20 in coins collected, we can provide a brick for the construction of a new school. All students are asked to bring in spare change into their classroom where it will be deposited into their cardboard schoolhouse coin box. The top two classrooms that bring in the most change will enjoy a free pizza lunch. With the help of St Cecilia’s community, we can work together to do our part in breaking the cycle of poverty by empowering a generation of children to make change for themselves.
As an extension to the “We Create Change” initiative, Grade 6 students will also be organizing, constructing, and running their own “Cardboard Arcade” on Tuesday, April 15. Students in all grades will have an opportunity to go to the gym and play various “Midway” type games created out of recycled cardboard. We are asking students to contribute 25 cents per play towards this great cause. The extra money will be added to the total money collected for the "We Make Change" coin drive. We thank you in advance for helping us provide impoverished children with the gift of education one coin, one brick, one school at a time.

Symmetry Take Two!
Take a look at Amelia's Educreation she made yesterday...well done!
Today, we were asked to figure out how many lines of symmetry were in a rectangle. Most of us (including a caffeine-deficient teacher) believed there were 4 lines of symmetry...just like a square. Ariane pointed out that it could only have two lines of symmetry because not all the sides are the same length. Using a paper rectangle, we tried (we REALLY tried) to find the four lines...but we were only able to find TWO!!! We then tried to figure out how many lines of symmetry were in a circle. There were too many to count! Aidan thought there was only one line of symmetry in a star. He proved he was correct when he cut out a star and could only fold the star in half ONCE. So there you go...a lot of learning happened today. We learned that mistakes happen and that's okay! Later, we used pattern blocks to create a design. Then we had to find the line (or lines) of symmetry on our design. They turned out to be...AWESMAZING!

Using "Show Me" to show our thinking!
We have been learning about symmetry in class. Students were asked to look around the classroom and the pod to find symmetry in real-life objects. Using the Show Me app, students recorded their findings:) Mason appears to be the King of Show Me! Take a look at the last video he created to show us how to add with regrouping.

The Lirpaloof Bird
Today, we read a story about the elusive Lirpaloof bird that can be found around this time of the year. We brought carrots outside (its favourite food) and tried to get a glimpse of this rare bird.
We did not have any luck luring the bird out of hiding...even with our crunchy carrots! Maybe we need to plant some trees in our schoolyard! Hopefully, before the end of the month, the Lirpaloof bird will make an appearance at St. Cecilia!
