Hip Hop, Earth Hour and Shapeshifters

Ariane's cousins volunteered their time to teach us some hip hop moves.  Here is a peak at the dance they are teaching us...and if you want to practice...

This weekend is Earth Hour.  Today, during last block, we had our own Earth Hour where we turned out all the lights (we always have our lights out) and did not use any technology.

We read the book called "The Greedy Triangle".  Afterwards, we created our own polygons.  Take a look at how cute they are!

Regrouping!

We continue to investigate addition and subtraction with regrouping.  It seems we get it one day and forget how to do it another day. Here are some videos to help you practice these important skills! Check out the awesome Math Playground  video to learn how to subtract big numbers that need you to regroup.

This poem is also a handy way to remember if we need to regroup when subtracting big numbers.

We watched a really cute video about Saint Patrick today...here it is Ilica! The spelling words for this week can be found here:)

We began our day with a math inquiry using Lucky Charms! The best part is we got to eat our math after we were finished!

We decided to sort the marshmallow shapes!

Lent

Today marks the first day of Lent.  Your child has filled a bag with daily promises.  Each night, they are to pull one of the promises out and try to complete it either that night or the next day.  We also made "Lenten Promise" cocoons that are on our prayer table.  We had to think of something we were going to give up or something we would do to make the world a better place...some sort of change...I wonder what will happen when Easter arrives?  We are also a class of 'bucket fillers'.  That means we do good deeds or say kind words to others.  It is easy and it is free.  You feel good and so does the other person.  We are going to try and fill up our class bucket...I know we can do it!

We are 'bucket fillers' at St. Cecilia

How to Subtract with Regrouping and...Mass Inquiry

Mass Inquiry

Here is an awesome video showing you how to subtract with regrouping!  Check it out here!
Today we were at centers looking at the mass of objects using non-standard units of measurement.  AnYuan told us that just because an object is bigger does not mean it will always have a bigger mass.  To prove his statement, we looked around the classroom for examples to prove his theory.

Bigger doesn't always mean heavier!
