Symmetry Take Two!

Take a look at Amelia's Educreation she made yesterday...well done!

Today, we were asked to figure out how many lines of symmetry were in a rectangle.  Most of us (including a caffeine-deficient teacher) believed there were 4 lines of symmetry...just like a square.  Ariane pointed out that it could only have two lines of symmetry because not all the sides are the same length.  Using a paper rectangle, we tried (we REALLY tried) to find the four lines...but we were only able to find TWO!!!  We then tried to figure out how many lines of symmetry were in a circle. There were too many to count!  Aidan thought there was only one line of symmetry in a star. He proved he was correct when he cut out a star and could only fold the star in half ONCE.  So there you go...a lot of learning happened today.  We learned that mistakes happen and that's okay!  Later, we used pattern blocks to create a design.  Then we had to find the line (or lines) of symmetry on our design.  They turned out to be...AWESMAZING!

Ava found 4 lines of symmetry in a square
Angie could only find two lines of symmetry in a rectangle
Aidan proved there was only one line of symmetry in this star (decagon)
